A week had passed with no signs of Luke or any other supernatural creature or event. Ty and I sat at the TV, watching nothing in particular when he clicked it off with the remote.

“What? Don’t you like Sabrina?” I teased.

“It’s not that. Do you know what today is?”

“December 13th.”

“Yeah, but what is December 13th?”

“The week before I need to get serious about final exams?” I shrugged.

“Come on, Ruby. It’s our three-month anniversary.”

“Three months already?” I laughed, and Ty threw a pillow at me. “Just kidding. It feels like we’ve been together so much longer than that.”

He threw another pillow at me.

“That’s a good thing,” I said. “We’re comfortable together. Meant to be together. In an open and honest relationship.” I warmed thinking about everything Ty and I shared. My last two relationships had been built on lies, and I finally found someone I trusted again. I trusted him with my fragile heart.

Ty added. “We have been through a lot already.” That was an understatement. “I got you something.” Ty shifted his weight and pulled a little box out from beneath the couch cushion.

Butterflies formed in my stomach as I sat up straight. “What is it?”

“Isn’t that the definition of a present? If I told you, it would ruin the surprise.”

Of course. I hadn’t been given a real gift in nearly a year. Not since my mom gave me a pots and pans set for Christmas to use when I went away to college. Who knew I’d just be inheriting hers? Then last February, when it was my birthday, Mom had been so sick everyone forgot about my special day. Maybe they didn’t forget, but I remember telling Sonja I didn’t want to celebrate, and she honored my wishes.

I pulled the tiny blue ribbon off the white box Ty handed me and lifted the cover. Inside was a little jewelry box. I flipped up its soft lid to reveal a beautiful silver ring shaped like a dragon chasing its tail. A small red jewel rest in the dragon’s eye.

“It’s not going to suck all my magic away, is it?” I joked.

Ty shook his head. “No. It’s a stone from this world. A ruby.”

Like me. I swallowed. “Ty, this couldn’t have been cheap. You didn’t sell your last silver coins, did you?”

He shook his head. “I’ve been making a bit of money here and there, trapping animals all over the neighborhood. Sure, I can’t get a job at a grocery store or a factory, but it appears people have no problems giving me money to remove squirrels, rabbits, or even raccoons living in their attics. It’s kinda like dragon hunting, but much less dangerous.”

“Unless you’re worried about rabies.”

“Rabies?” He tilted his chin and raised an eyebrow.

I put the ring on my finger. “Rabies is a virus from some wild animal bites. You can look it up on the computer.”

“You don’t have to worry. I’ll make sure I don’t get bit.”

“Says the guy covered in dragon scratches.” I examined the ring and how perfectly it fit on my finger.
